CHAPTER 8
With little else to do at the moment, David and Jamie returned to Toronto to await an update from Desmond Jansen, or the other involved agencies should any information related to Piper Falco come to light. They arrived late Tuesday afternoon, after a flight that David had spent most of in a feverish slumber. The foggy head and aching joints had carried over from the night before, and by the time they reached the airport David was also experiencing bouts of chills, a racing heart, and nausea. His skin had become so itchy and inflamed he could barely keep from digging at his own flesh. The symptoms hung on through the travel back to Canada with enough intensity that it was all he could do to endure the taxi ride to their house.
Once home he deposited his luggage in the mud room and made a mad dash to the main floor bathroom. After regurgitating what felt like every meal he’d eaten in the last year, David took a hot shower and fell into bed. The next thing he knew sunlight was streaming in the window through a six inch gap in the navy curtains, and a deathly silence filled the house.
With a groan he rolled toward the bedside table. It took several seconds for his eyes to focus on the digital clock, and when he realized it was nearly eleven a.m. he lurched into a sitting position. With his feet on the ground the room swirled about him and his brain engorged like a sea sponge within his skull, bringing on a burst of heart palpitations and burning nausea.
He stumbled to the bathroom to throw up what little remained in his stomach, in the process shredding his already tender throat. The last mouthful to hit the water in the toilet consisted of stomach bile and blood. After a few more minutes of agonizing dry heaves David curled into a ball on the cool bathroom floor. He must have fallen asleep again, not waking until he felt someone insistently shaking his arm.
“David. David, what’s going on?”
Jamie’s face came into focus, so close he could feel the man’s breath against his cheek. “I’m sick…” He started to fade again and Jamie gave him another good shaking.
“We need to get you to the hospital.”
David sat with his back against the wall as Jamie raced into the bedroom. He grabbed a shirt from the floor and returned to help David into it. With much effort and a near fall, Jamie got David to the lower level of the house and deposited him on the bench in the front foyer. He was dimly aware of Jamie speaking in the other room, though he couldn’t process the individual words. Many things happened next, all occurring without concept of time or context; the front door opened, signaled by a brief influx of warm air and street noise, male voices spoke, and shoes were placed on his feet.
Two sets of hands hauled him up by the arms and all but dragged him outside.
